This is only the second time I’ve seen so many cars I want to buy in one place.

Kinja'd!!!

The other time was also a Leake auction wherein some dude was selling off his massive eclectic car collection. Seriously there were at least six Auburns and several Zimmers...

I need to go home and ch ange my pants...

Those are definitely fun! Can be depressing, when reality sets in and you realize just how much is outside of your financial grasp, but at least you can entertain yourself with all of the cars.

Back in April 2016, my dad and I flew out to Tulsa to meet up with my uncle (that’s where he lives), and road-tripped down to Dallas for the Leake auction. I remember seeing a number of old air-cooled 911s go for eye-watering money, a 56 or 57 Bel Air Fuelie (that ironically had a really hard time staying running for its turn across the auction block), ton of grey-market Toyota FJ diesels, and a beautiful old unrestored late-50s Cadillac limo.

None of those I got pics of, though, because I suck at remembering to take pictures in the moment . And I’m all about the kinda odd-ball and/or less desirable/valuable vehicles, some of which I did get pics of . Like this 100% mint 1970 VW Squareback (my mom had one as her first car) with a factory automatic transmission, amazingly enough:

And I fell in love with this ‘59 4-door Bel Air... still on my bucket list of cars, despite the less-than-stellar-in-a-crash X-frame construction. Those horizontal fins are irresistible :

This 1960 Continental Mark V, which IIRC was, at one time, one of LBJ’s personal vehicles on his ranch in Texas, with proof via documentation :

[I’m getting close to that car with my ‘77 Continental, and even though I absolutely love it, gotta admit it really does lack the flair and panache of this older era.]

And finally, for some comic relief, what I believe to be a 1980s Rolls Royce, which, to the surprise of no one, clearly wasted no time christening the cement beneath it with one or more of its vital fluids.

Unfortunately none of those went for anything close to what I’d be able to afford, and thus nothing followed me home. But my dad, who was laser focused on getting an old truck, did manage to strike a deal with a fellow selling a ‘53 Chevy 3100 pickup that he had built himself out of several different vehicles... I think the stovebolt six came out of a ‘59 (so it had a pressurized oiling system, instead of the splash oiling that came with the ‘53), and the three-on-the-tree setup was replaced with a four-speed floor shifted Saginaw, probably from some GM vehicle out of the early 60s. He left right after his truck failed to reach the reserve, but the auction folks put dad in touch with the guy, and we made a pit-stop at his farm on the way back to Tulsa to finalize negotiations.

It was certainly a pretty cool experience. Hopefully will make it out there again someday.
